St Brendans GAA
St Brendan’s picked up their first victory of the season when they played Cu Chulainns of Leeds in the Pennine League Division 1 last Sunday. Under sunny conditions at Beeston Sports Centre, St Brendan’s were made to work hard for a 2-13 to 0-4 score line against the All-Britain Champions.
St Brendan’s dominated early on in this game with great fielding from the midfield pair of Gibney and Sands, who were able to supply plenty of quality balls into the forward line. The St Brendan’s forwards were able to take advantage of this and were able to find the net twice and hit several points without reply. Cu Chulainns did finish the stronger team in the last 5 minutes of the half and won a penalty. However, former Down goalkeeper Declan Alder was on hand to save it.
In the second half, St Brendan’s got off to a good start putting the ball over the bar twice in the first five minutes. Cu Chulainns started to put St Brendan’s under pressure going forward but tenacious tackling from Boyle, Rooney and Plant prevented them not being able to score mid-way through the second half. Cu Chulainns were able to find a few points but great tackling and St Brendan’s being able to retain possession off the ball in the last 10 minutes ensured no comeback from the AB Champions.
